Finland to host Europe's first superconducting quantum computer with logical qubits

IQM Quantum Computers will deploy LUMI-IQ, Europe's first superconducting quantum computer designed from the start to support logical qubits, at CSC's data center in Kajaani, Finland, integrated directly into the LUMI AI Factory to create a combined HPC, AI and quantum computing environment. The system, co-funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking alongside Finland, Czechia, Norway and Poland, will be delivered in three stages through 2029 using IQM's Halocene product line

The initial 2027 installation features an IQM Halocene H4 system with 150 physical qubits and early quantum error correction capabilities, with 2028 upgrades lowering logical error rates and adding real-time error correction feedback loops, culminating in a 2029 Halocene H5 system capable of encoding up to 9 fault-tolerant logical qubits using distance 11 surface code and distance 9 color code encoding. Logical qubits, built by combining multiple physical qubits through error correction, are significantly more stable than raw physical qubits and are considered essential for running the longer, more complex calculations real world quantum applications require

CSC CEO Kimmo Koski said the greatest potential lies in combining the complementary strengths of AI, high performance computing and quantum computing, with logical qubits making calculations more reliable while AI and HPC provide the scale and orchestration needed around them.
