Agents generally operate through a repeating cycle, perceiving their environment or current state, analyzing that information to decide on the next best step, acting by executing something concrete like sending a message, querying a database, or calling an API, and then evaluating the outcome to inform what happens next. This loop can repeat continuously, and modern agents built on large language models use natural language understanding to interpret goals and determine when to reach for an external tool rather than handling everything with pure text generation alone

The degree of autonomy varies widely in practice, ranging from semi-autonomous agents that pause for human approval at key decision points to fully autonomous agents operating independently within defined parameters.
