The interesting part of DeepSeek V4 may not be whether it beats every rival model, but whether China can keep improving AI while relying more on its own chips. If the model is being optimised around Huawei hardware, that makes this a tech sovereignty story as much as an AI performance story.

Benchmarks are useful, but they only tell part of the story. If a company can train and deploy competitive models using hardware that is easier for it to obtain, that's arguably a much bigger strategic advantage.

The real question is whether that approach scales over the next few generations.

If efficiency keeps improving alongside the hardware, the performance gap may matter less than people expect. :)

Trying to limit access to cutting-edge chips can encourage researchers to optimize software much more aggressively than they otherwise would have. History is full of examples where constraints pushed engineering forward.

That doesn't automatically mean the restricted side catches up completely, but it can narrow the gap faster than many predicted.

In reality it's probably a long series of incremental improvements to chips, software, networking, and manufacturing.

Whoever keeps improving all of those pieces consistently will likely come out ahead, even if they don't win every headline. :-\

Part of me thinks we're putting too much weight on benchmark leaderboards.

Most users never ask what score a model achieved on a particular test. They care whether it writes good code, answers questions accurately, or runs quickly enough for their workflow.

If DeepSeek delivers that on domestic hardware, it's a meaningful achievement regardless of whether another model edges it out on a chart.
