A Chinese startup called Tuoyuan is reportedly aiming to build a neutral atom quantum computer with 100 logical qubits. The Quantum Insider's Matt Swayne reports that the company is led by researcher Mu Qiao. It has reportedly raised seed and angel funding worth hundreds of millions of yuan, which is tens of millions of US dollars

The funding figures come from Chinese tech outlet QbitAI, republished by 36Kr, and name Source Code Capital, Oasis Capital and CICC Capital as investors. No exact amount was given, and The Quantum Insider could not independently verify the financing, so the numbers should be treated with caution

Qiao has a strong research record. He was a co-first and corresponding author on a 2025 Nature paper about a quantum magnet built from Rydberg atom arrays. He also led a 2024 Nature Physics study using trapped ions to simulate quantum systems

The company has not disclosed hardware benchmarks, error correction details or a timeline. It plans to use AI for experiment design and equipment control, which fits a broader trend of AI being used to run quantum labs more efficiently

Neutral atoms have become one of the hottest areas in quantum computing, with QuEra, Pasqal and Atom Computing all making big progress. A well funded Chinese entrant adds to the competition. Without technical details, though, it is hard to judge how serious the 100 logical qubit goal is

Is neutral atoms becoming the leading quantum hardware approach? And how should we judge startups that announce goals without data?
