According to a Reuters report, Anthropic is evaluating whether to fast track the release of a new AI model specifically to defend its competitive position ahead of its planned IPO, after OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, launched on September 3, rapidly gained enterprise market share since its release. Astra has reportedly captured roughly 13 percent of enterprise AI spending according to data from Ramp, compared to around 8 percent for Anthropic's Claude Fable, and Astra became the top model on OpenRouter for the first time in over two and a half years, displacing Anthropic from that position.

What makes the situation notable is the apparent tension with Anthropic's own recent public messaging, since CEO Dario Amodei published a lengthy essay on September 12, just over a week before this report, arguing for an industry wide slowdown in AI development specifically on safety grounds. Considering a rushed competitive release so soon after publicly calling for exactly the opposite approach creates what the report describes as an obvious public contradiction between the company's stated safety philosophy and the commercial pressure it is now apparently facing.

The stakes behind that pressure are considerable, with Anthropic reportedly projecting 2028 revenue of between 190 and 200 billion dollars, compared to OpenAI's roughly 40 billion dollar annualised run rate as of this past July, while rising interest rates are said to be intensifying investor pressure across the industry for nearer term profitability. Separately, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has confirmed that OpenAI itself will not pursue a public listing in 2026, citing safety concerns of its own.
