After months of what Wall Street dubbed the SaaSpocalypse, wiping tens of billions off software stocks on fears that AI coding tools would let companies build their own internal software instead of paying for subscriptions, the actual disruption appears to be unfolding considerably slower than initially feared. JPMorgan strategists said in a recent note that markets had been pricing in near term AI disruption at levels that appear unrealistic, arguing the extreme price action in software stocks created conditions for a possible rebound, particularly among higher quality, more resilient names

The distinction increasingly being drawn is between software companies with genuinely replaceable products and those built on durable moats like trusted proprietary data, deep enterprise integration, or specialized domain expertise that a quickly generated AI tool can't easily replicate. Morgan Stanley's own analysis concluded the more likely outcome is widespread AI adoption within existing software, companies paying for tools that make their people work faster, rather than AI wholesale replacing the software itself and putting its major customers out of business

Block's decision to cut 40 percent of its workforce earlier this year, with CEO Jack Dorsey citing AI's ability to let a smaller team do more, remains cited as real evidence the underlying disruption is genuine even if its pace has been overstated. Curious what people think actually explains the gap between the dramatic headlines earlier this year and the more measured reality now, was the initial panic simply premature, or is real disruption still coming just on a longer timeline than the doom narrative suggested
