South Korea's financial sector is under attack again. TechCrunch reports that brokerages Daishin Securities and Mirae Asset Global Investments, along with cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb, have all reported new cyberattacks

The incidents come about a month after a September wave of attacks that CrowdStrike linked to what it believes is a China based hacker using an AI powered penetration testing tool called Artex. The cause of the new breaches has not yet been determined

Local media report that Daishin's breach exposed the names, email addresses and mobile numbers of 38,490 customers. Daishin says it will compensate for any losses as required by law. Mirae and Bithumb reported incidents on 28 October but have not confirmed whether any data was stolen

South Korea's financial regulator is calling for stronger security across the industry, and the government plans security inspections of dozens of private sector IT systems. Japan also reported an incident at GMO Internet on 27 October, although no link between the two has been established

Repeated attacks on the same sector within weeks suggest attackers have found a weakness they can exploit widely. If AI tools are speeding up these campaigns, as some researchers believe, defenders will need to move faster too. Customers of the affected firms should be alert for phishing

Are financial firms doing enough to protect customer data? And is AI making cyberattacks harder to stop?
