Anyone who is good with technology ends up as the family IT department. Birthdays, Christmas and Sunday lunches often turn into tech support sessions, fixing phones, printers and email accounts. Over time, most of us develop a favourite piece of advice that we repeat to every relative. Some tips prevent disasters, while others just save us from the same phone call every month

Common examples seem to be using a password manager, turning on two factor authentication, never clicking links in unexpected messages and backing up photos. Some people swear by teaching relatives to restart a device before calling for help. Others focus on spotting scam calls and fake emails, which have become far more convincing recently

My go to tip is simple. If anyone ever calls or messages saying there is a problem with your bank, computer or parcel, hang up or ignore it, and contact the company yourself using a number you already trust. It has saved at least two relatives from scams that I know of

I am curious which tips people find most useful, and which ones relatives follow. Feel free to share how you explain things, since getting the message across is often harder than knowing the answer. Patience helps more than technical knowledge
