If you only buy one thing, make it the Apple Pencil. It completely changes how you use the iPad, especially for notes, PDFs, and general navigation. Without it, you are mostly just tapping and typing.

Second thing is a proper case, ideally one with a stand. You will use the stand constantly for watching, typing, and even just browsing. A bare iPad gets annoying fast.

Honestly though, do not go overboard. Pencil, case, maybe keyboard depending on your use. Everything else is optional and depends on how far you want to push the iPad

For me the biggest upgrade is a decent keyboard case, especially if the iPad is doing any proper typing rather than just browsing. A trackpad makes a surprisingly big difference too, because you can move between tapping and cursor work without constantly reaching for the screen. The Apple Pencil is another one that is genuinely useful if you annotate PDFs, take handwritten notes or draw, but it is a fairly expensive way of discovering that you never use a stylus.

A USB-C hub is also worth considering if your iPad supports the relevant connections. Being able to plug in a monitor, SD card, USB drive or wired accessories can make it feel much more like a small computer. Just check the exact iPad model first, because accessory compatibility is where the marketing departments start getting creative.

Beyond that, I would skip most of the flashy stuff. A £40 stand that holds the iPad at several angles can be more useful every day than some fancy gadget you use twice. A good case, keyboard, Pencil if needed, and perhaps a hub covers most real-world uses without turning the desk into an Apple accessory showroom.

One underrated accessory is simply a really good stand. It sounds boring compared with all the "next level" gadgets, but having the iPad at the right height makes it much nicer for recipes, video calls, second-screen use or reading while working at a desk. The cheap folding stands are often perfectly adequate too, so this is one area where spending more does not automatically buy a better experience.

For travel, I would put a compact USB-C charger and a decent cable near the top of the list. A multi-port charger is particularly handy if you are charging the iPad, phone and headphones at the same time. An external SSD can also be useful if you regularly move large video files or photos, although most people probably do not need one just because a YouTube video said it was essential.

The accessory that gets the biggest vote depends on what you actually do with the iPad. For notes, Pencil. For typing, keyboard and trackpad. For desk use, stand and hub. For media, probably just a stand and decent headphones. There is no prize for owning the most dongles, despite what the accessory aisle would have us believe.
