People chase all sorts of numbers when their Wi-Fi feels slow, signal bars, router age, how many devices are connected, but the single number that actually explains most real world slowdowns is latency, not raw speed. A connection can show a fast advertised download speed on paper while still feeling sluggish if latency, the delay before data starts moving at all, is high

High latency is why video calls stutter and games feel laggy even on connections that pass a basic speed test with flying colors, since a speed test mostly measures how much data can move once it starts, not how quickly that movement actually begins. Congestion, interference from other devices, and distance from the router all drive latency up independently of your advertised plan speed

If you're only going to check one thing next time your connection feels off, run a ping test rather than just a download speed test. Curious whether people have actually checked their own latency numbers before, or always just defaulted to the standard speed test everyone reaches for first

Never actually checked latency separately until reading something like this, always just assumed a good download number meant everything was fine
