How to free up storage on Windows 11 without deleting personal files

[GhostRider89]

My Windows 11 laptop says storage is almost full but I don't want to delete any of my actual files, what's the best way to clear space?

[Totally]

Where should I look first?
Settings, System, Storage, then click Temporary files. This shows exactly what's actually safe to remove, cached updates, old Windows installations, temp files, and your Recycle Bin, all in one place

Is it safe to delete Windows Update Cleanup files?
Yes, these are leftover files from previous updates that Windows keeps in case you need to roll back, and on most systems they can be several gigabytes with zero downside to removing them

What about that Previous Windows installation folder?
Safe to delete if it's been more than about 10 days since you upgraded and everything's working fine, that folder alone can be 15 to 20GB on some machines

Will Storage Sense keep doing this automatically?
Yes, turning on Storage Sense under the same Storage menu lets Windows automatically clear temporary files and empty the Recycle Bin on a schedule you set, so you don't have to remember to do this manually again

What if that's still not enough space?
Check Settings, Apps, and sort by size, a surprising amount of freed space usually comes from one or two apps you installed once and forgot about rather than your actual personal files

Quick version
- Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files, this alone usually frees several GB
- Delete the Previous Windows installation folder if it's been over 10 days
- Turn on Storage Sense so this doesn't creep up again
- Sort installed apps by size before assuming you need to touch personal files at all

The previous Windows installation folder was eating almost 18GB on mine, deleted it and immediately felt the difference

Storage Sense running automatically has genuinely saved me from ever hitting this problem again since I turned it on

[BretHart_99]

Sorted apps by size once and found a game I installed once, played for ten minutes, and forgot about that was taking up 40GB alone

Didn't realise the update cleanup files could get that large, cleared almost 6GB just from that one option

This is way less scary than it sounds, none of these options touch your actual documents or photos, good post for anyone nervous about it

One thing that often gets overlooked is the Windows Update cache. Over time it can quietly pile up several gigabytes, especially if updates fail or retry. Running Disk Cleanup and selecting "Windows Update Cleanup" can clear that safely.

Another hidden space hog is old restore points. System Restore can reserve a big chunk of your drive without you realizing it. You can reduce the allocation instead of deleting it entirely, which is a nice middle ground.

Storage Sense is also worth enabling if you haven't already. It can automatically clean temp files and old system junk in the background so you don't have to think about it.

None of this touches your personal stuff, so it's a pretty low-risk way to claw back space.

People always say "don't delete your files," but sometimes the issue isn't your files at all, it's duplicate system clutter.

Tools like Disk Cleanup or even third-party analyzers can show you what's actually taking space in a visual way. It's eye-opening the first time you see it.

Old driver packages, leftover installer files, and logs can pile up quietly over months or years.

Once you see it mapped out, the cleanup becomes much less scary.

A small but useful habit is checking "Apps & Features" sorted by size. Some programs install extra components or leave behind data even after updates.

You might find something you forgot about that's quietly using several gigabytes.

Also, language packs and optional features can add up. Removing ones you don't use is completely safe.

It's less about one big fix and more about stacking a bunch of small wins until your drive can breathe again

Another trick is moving apps rather than deleting them. Windows 11 lets you relocate certain apps to another drive if you have one, like an external SSD.

Games in particular are massive these days, and shifting them off your main drive can free up a lot of room without uninstalling anything.

Even cloud storage apps can be configured to keep files online-only, so they don't take up local space until you open them.

Feels like cheating, but it works

Temp files are the usual suspects, but browser caches can be surprisingly huge too. Chrome, Edge, and others will happily store gigabytes of cached images and data over time.

Clearing cache doesn't remove bookmarks or saved passwords, just the temporary files. It can even make things feel a bit snappier afterward.

Another angle is checking the Downloads folder. Not "personal files" in the sentimental sense, but it often becomes a dumping ground for installers and duplicates.

A quick sort by file size there can reveal some easy wins

Something people rarely mention is hibernation. If it's enabled, Windows creates a hidden file called hiberfil.sys that can take up several gigabytes.

If you don't use hibernation, you can disable it with a simple command and instantly free that space. It's one of the biggest single-file savings you can get.

That said, laptops benefit from hibernation for battery safety, so it depends on your usage.

Still, worth checking if you're tight on space.

Virtual memory settings can also be tweaked. Windows uses a paging file that can grow quite large depending on your RAM and usage

You don't want to disable it entirely, but setting a reasonable custom size instead of letting it expand freely can save space

This is a bit more advanced, so definitely look up a guide before changing it

Still, it's another example of space being used behind the scenes rather than by your actual files
