(TLDR: If its been a while, make sure you aren't eating while reading this)

Saw a cleaning guide from Sonos today and it made me realize I have genuinely never once cleaned my headphones beyond wiping the ear cups with my sleeve when they look a bit shiny. The guide is aimed at their Ace headphones but the method applies to basically any over ear or on ear pair, and honestly it made cleaning sound way less complicated than I expected going in. Their basic recommendation is to wipe headphones down daily with a clean lint free cloth, then do a proper clean whenever smudges or smells start building up, using nothing more exotic than water and a tiny bit of mild washing up liquid.

The actual method is five steps and none of them require anything you don't already have lying around the house. Turn off or unplug the headphones first since water and electronics obviously don't mix well even in small amounts. Mix a weak solution, something like a cup of water to a quarter teaspoon of mild soap, then wipe down the hard plastic and metal surfaces with a cloth dampened in that solution, being careful to keep it away from any ports or openings. Then you remove the ear cushions specifically so you can clean them separately without risking the drivers underneath, since those cushions are usually the part that's actually gross given how much sweat and skin contact they deal with daily.

The things to avoid list is honestly the more useful part of the whole guide for anyone tempted to go nuclear on a stubborn stain. No alcohol based solvents or harsh chemicals, since apparently those can strip the finish right off. No soaking or excess moisture, obviously, and no vacuuming if your headphones have a built in microphone, since the air pressure can apparently damage the mic itself. Basically the entire philosophy here is go gentle and go slow rather than reaching for anything aggressive.

Ear cushions get singled out as the component that wears out fastest regardless of how carefully you clean them, just because they're constantly rubbing against skin and absorbing oils and sweat every single time you wear the headphones. Some higher end pairs now ship with magnetically attached replaceable cushions specifically because of this, which feels like a smart design choice once you actually think about how much abuse that one part takes compared to everything else. If your headphones don't have replaceable cushions, cleaning becomes even more important since you're stuck with whatever condition they're in long term.

Reading through all this made me want to ask the actual question though, not the sanitized guide version but the honest one. How often is everyone here really cleaning their headphones, daily wipe downs like the guide suggests, a proper clean every week or two, or realistically just whenever something starts smelling off enough that you can't ignore it anymore
