Not everyone wants, or can afford, a new laptop every few years. Many older machines still have plenty of life in them, especially for browsing, email, documents and streaming. But they do tend to slow down over time. Updates pile up, storage fills, fans clog with dust and batteries lose capacity

There are plenty of ways to breathe new life into an old laptop. Swapping a hard drive for a solid state drive is often the single biggest improvement. Adding memory, cleaning out dust, replacing thermal paste and removing unnecessary startup programs can all help too. Some people install a lighter operating system, like Linux Mint or ChromeOS Flex, which can make old hardware feel surprisingly fast

This is particularly relevant for Windows 10 users. Mainstream support ended in October 2025, and as far as I know, the extended security updates offered to home users run out in mid October this year. Many machines cannot officially run Windows 11, because of processor and security chip requirements. That leaves a lot of perfectly usable laptops facing a difficult choice

My own laptop is a 2017 model that was painfully slow two years ago. I fitted an SSD for about thirty pounds, added more memory and cleaned out the fans. It now boots in under twenty seconds and runs everything I need. It might last another five years at this rate

What tricks have you used to keep an old laptop running well? And what are you doing about Windows 10?
