I'm trying to avoid doing a full reinstall but my system definitely needs a cleanup.

What are the most effective ways to speed things up without wiping everything?

I've seen advice all over the place but a lot of it feels outdated or just placebo.

Looking for things that actually make a noticeable difference.

here's a lot of nonsense advice out there, so you're right to question it.

Things that actually help:

Disable startup programs you don't need
Uninstall apps you forgot you had
Turn off unnecessary background apps
Check for Windows updates (they do fix performance issues sometimes)
If you're on an HDD, upgrading to SSD is the single biggest improvement

Things that don't really help much:

"Registry cleaners"
Random optimization tools

Keep it simple and focus on what's actually running on your system.

Definitely switching to an SSD even if its just what Windows runs on can make a massive difference. Especially at startup

That lines up with what I have been seeing. I would try the least destructive fix first before changing too much at once.

Worked for me at least.
sudo make me a sandwich

Feels like the right read on it. More to come on this I suspect.
VAR can do one

That is the conclusion most people following it closely are landing on. The difference between what is being reported and what is actually happening is often significant.

I will update this thread if anything significant changes.

Fair enough. Thanks for that.

Most slowdowns on older machines are disk related not processor related.
It's not a bug, it's a feature
