Best way to back up an iPhone without iCloud (2026)

[NovaPrime]

Is there a good way to back up my iPhone without paying for more iCloud storage?

[DarkEnergy27]

Do I need iCloud at all to back up an iPhone?
No. Apple has always supported backing up locally to a computer using Finder on a Mac or the Finder equivalent in current macOS, and it still works exactly the same way in 2026

How do I back up to a computer instead of iCloud?
Plug the iPhone into a Mac with a cable, open Finder, select the phone under Locations, and choose Back Up Now. On Windows you will need Apple's standalone Devices app, since iTunes was retired a while back

Is a local backup as complete as an iCloud one?
Actually more complete in one way, a local backup can include a full encrypted copy of Health data and saved passwords if you tick the encrypt local backup box, something standard iCloud backups don't always capture the same way

What's the downside of local backups?
You need physical access to the same computer to restore, and you have to remember to actually do it, iCloud just runs quietly in the background on its own schedule

Can I use both at once?
Yes, plenty of people keep a small iCloud backup running for the automatic safety net and do an occasional full local backup for a proper complete copy

Quick summary if you don't want to read the whole thread
- Local backup via a computer is completely free, no storage limit beyond your drive
- Tick encrypt local backup to include saved passwords and health data
- iCloud is more convenient for automatic day to day safety
- Doing both isn't overkill, it's honestly the sensible setup

Been doing local backups for years, only reason I even have iCloud storage paid for is photos syncing across devices

Forgot the encrypt box exists for the longest time and wondered why my passwords never carried over on restore, that box is doing a lot of quiet work

Windows user here, the standalone Devices app from Apple works fine but it's clunkier than old iTunes ever was, still better than paying monthly for more cloud space

[Grim Tracey]

Do this every time before a major iOS update just in case, cheap insurance for five minutes of effort

Genuinely didn't know you could still do this until this thread, been paying for the 200GB tier for two years for no reason apparently

Using a computer backup is still the best free option. Plug the iPhone into a Mac (Finder) or Windows (Apple Devices app), then choose "Back up all data on your iPhone to this computer." That creates a full local copy.

Tick the "Encrypt local backup" option as well. It stores passwords, health data, and Wi-Fi settings that otherwise get skipped.

Store that backup on an external drive if your laptop storage is tight. It's basically your own offline iCloud

On Windows, the Apple Devices app is a bit clunky, but it gets the job done. Connect the phone, trust the computer, then hit backup.

One tip: check the backup location. By default it goes to your system drive, which can fill up quickly.

You can move the backup folder to another drive and use a symbolic link so future backups go there automatically.

Mac users have it slightly easier. Finder handles backups cleanly, and you can verify them under "Manage Backups."

A good habit is keeping two backups: one on the Mac and one copied to an external SSD.

Redundancy beats regret every time

Another approach is selective backups instead of full images. Photos and videos can be offloaded via USB or AirDrop, contacts synced to Google, and notes exported.

It's more manual, but it spreads risk across multiple services.

Kind of like not putting all your eggs in one basket.

Third-party tools like iMazing or AnyTrans offer more control than Apple's built-in options. They let you browse backups, extract specific data, and schedule backups.

The downside is cost, but some people find the flexibility worth it.

Especially if you hate the "all or nothing" approach.

Restoring from a local backup is also faster than iCloud in many cases. No waiting on downloads, just plug in and go.

That's a big plus if you ever need to recover quickly.

A hybrid setup works well for a lot of people. Use local backups for full device snapshots and free cloud options (like Google Photos) for media.

Best of both worlds without paying Apple monthly

If you're worried about losing everything at once, rotate backups. Keep one recent backup and one older one.

That protects against corruption or accidental overwrites.

A bit overkill maybe, but comforting

For app data, keep in mind some apps sync independently (like WhatsApp or Google apps). Those might already be backed up elsewhere.

Worth checking so you don't duplicate effort.

Photos alone usually take up the most space. Copying them to a PC regularly can free up your phone and act as a backup at the same time.

Windows Photos app or just drag-and-drop both work fine.

One overlooked trick is backing up to a network drive. On a Mac, you can point backups to a NAS with a bit of setup.

That way every backup is automatically stored off your main device.

Feels very "set it and forget it" once configured

Encryption is worth repeating because people skip it. Without encryption, things like saved passwords and Health data are not included.

You end up with an incomplete backup and don't realize until restore time
