Would rather hear what has actually worked for people here.

Most of the advice I have found online is just recycled from the same few sources.

Part of the reason I asked is because I would rather avoid wasting time going down the wrong route.

A good answer to this does not have to be definitive - it just has to be honest about what it does and does not know.

Any thoughts welcome.

Interesting, I had the opposite experience. Good stuff.

Background processes and startup items cause more problems than hardware failures in my experience.

That tends to work on clean installs but real machines are messier. Nine times out of ten it is something boring like a driver or a startup item rather than the hardware itself.

Start there and see if it makes a difference.

I tried that and the catch was not obvious until afterwards. I will keep an eye on it.

Always rule out the obvious before going further.
Still figuring it all out
