Watching sport on TV can be deceptive. Elite athletes make difficult things look effortless, and from the comfort of the sofa it is easy to think we could do better. Then we try it ourselves and quickly realise how wrong we were. Some sports are humbling in ways you only understand once you have a go

Darts is a classic example. It looks simple to throw three darts at a board, but hitting treble twenty consistently is incredibly hard. Golf is another, where hitting a ball straight seems easy until you try it. Snooker players make potting balls look effortless, but most of us struggle to pot anything at all

Other sports look easy for different reasons. Curling seems gentle until you realise how precise and tiring it is. Cycling looks smooth until you try climbing a mountain. Even walking races look a bit silly on TV, until you try to keep that pace for kilometres without breaking into a run

I once tried a boxing class thinking I was reasonably fit. I lasted about three minutes before needing a sit down. Respect for boxers went through the roof after that
