Which sport has the worst officiating right now and why

Every sport has its own particular flavor of officiating controversy, but some feel genuinely more broken than others right now, whether that's due to the technology available, the sheer speed of the game, or just plain inconsistent application of rules that are already written down clearly on paper

My own vote goes to football specifically because of how VAR has actually been implemented rather than the technology itself being the fundamental problem, the tool exists to reduce clear and obvious errors but somehow still produces long delays, inconsistent standards for what actually counts as a clear error from one game to the next, and constant confusion among fans in the stadium who often can't even see what's actually being reviewed on the big screen

Basketball gets a lot of criticism too though, particularly around foul consistency varying wildly depending on which specific referee crew happens to be working a given game, and the general sense that superstar players get called fouls at a noticeably different rate than role players do for what looks like the exact same contact on replay

Cricket actually seems to have handled this better than most other sports in some ways, the Decision Review System has real limits built in, teams only get a fixed number of unsuccessful challenges per innings, which forces genuine strategic restraint rather than every single close call getting endlessly appealed and reviewed
