That is the first ever World Cup round of 32 in the books after last night's finale, and the last 16 kicks off TODAY with Canada facing Morocco in Houston. The new round rattles through by Tuesday, so clear the diary now

The headliners pick themselves. Spain against Portugal in Dallas on Monday is a final a fortnight early, the USA get Belgium with Balogun suspended after that red card, Colombia and Switzerland meet in Vancouver with one goal conceded between them all tournament, and France look terrifying after dismantling Sweden with the Mbappe brace, with Paraguay their reward

The survivors from the round tell the story of it, Argentina needed 111 minutes and an own goal against Cape Verde, Egypt out defended Australia to penalties, Belgium came from the dead against Senegal, Mexico ended their knockout drought at the Azteca, and Norway rode a late Haaland winner past Ivory Coast. Barely a routine result anywhere, which after all the format complaints feels like the tournament answering back

So, three for the board. The tie of the round beyond the obvious Iberian answer, the favourite you are most worried about, and the one team from the so called soft half nobody is taking seriously enough?

Normal is overrated

Tie of the round beyond Spain Portugal is Colombia Switzerland and I will hear no other answers, two elite defences and an actual quarterfinal on the line. Football hipster Christmas

EventHorizon27

USA Belgium is quietly enormous, a home team without its striker against a side that just remembered how to be Belgium in the last half hour against Senegal. Anything can happen there and probably will

QuantumToken57

Favourite I worry about is Argentina and it is not close after last night. The legs are going and everyone left in the bracket saw it happen in real time

FridayFeeling

France answer for me, nobody survives the round they looked THAT good in. The tournament gods punish early masterclasses, this is settled science

Phil7

Settled science with a sample size of vibes, France with Mbappe in that mood do not care about your narrative patterns

Soft half sleeper is Norway, everyone remembers the late escape and forgets they have the most unstoppable single weapon left in that side of the draw. One Haaland week and they are in a semifinal
Gunners for life.

Canada Morocco TODAY deserves more attention than this thread is giving it, hosts with momentum against the best organised side from the last World Cup cycle. Houston will be bouncing

The format answered back is exactly right. We were promised dead rubbers and mismatches and got own goal winners, shootouts and Cape Verde nearly toppling the champions. I will take the apology in writing from the purists

ClusterCanopy

Still team purist, the round was fun AND half these ties would have been group games in the old format. Both things can be true

Abbie21

Circling Monday in Dallas and taking the afternoon off, some fixtures you rearrange life for and Yamal against Ronaldo across 90 minutes is one of them

Fam41

Whoever emerges from the Egypt Mexico region of the bracket is reaching a semifinal almost unnoticed, mark this post
