The Commonwealth Games started in Glasgow, but the BBC isn't showing it

[Amber Tiger]

Here's what channel it's actually on

The 2026 Commonwealth Games kicked off with an opening ceremony at Glasgow's OVO Hydro on July 23, with the first full day of sporting action, 3x3 basketball, bowls, boxing, para powerlifting and swimming, getting underway on July 24. The Games run through to a closing ceremony on August 2, and this is the fourth time Scotland has hosted, after Edinburgh in 1970 and 1986 and Glasgow itself back in 2014

The big change this year, and the reason a lot of people have been confused looking for it on their usual channel, is that the BBC will not be showing the Commonwealth Games at all in 2026, ending a run of coverage that stretched back to 1954, 72 consecutive years. The BBC said it was unable to match the winning bid, and TNT Sports has taken over as the main broadcaster instead. Full live coverage of every single event is available through TNT Sports and its streaming service HBO Max, but that means a subscription is required to watch the bulk of the action live

If you don't want to pay for a subscription, Channel 5 is stepping in as the main free-to-air option, showing extensive daily highlights covering the biggest moments, medal wins and key talking points from the Games rather than live coverage of every event. TNT Sports has also confirmed a live studio show broadcasting daily from 8:30am to 10:30pm UK time, touring between venues to capture key moments in real time alongside expert analysis, available to subscribers

Worth knowing too, this year's Games are a notably smaller affair than usual, since original host Victoria, Australia pulled out back in 2023 over spiralling costs, leaving Glasgow to step in without time to build any new athlete accommodation or venues, reusing facilities from the 2014 Games instead. Roughly 3,000 athletes are competing across 215 events in 11 sports, a meaningfully reduced program compared to previous editions, and the United States and China, who don't compete at the Commonwealth Games at all, remain notably absent as always given the competition is restricted to Commonwealth of Nations members and their territories

72 consecutive years of BBC coverage ending is genuinely the bigger story here for a lot of casual viewers who just assumed it would automatically be on BBC One like every previous Games

[LegendaryRob93]

Channel 5 stepping in with daily highlights is a reasonable compromise for anyone who doesn't want to pay for another streaming subscription just for this, though obviously missing live coverage is a real downgrade

[Ellie85]

The BBC being unable to match the bid says a lot about where broadcasting rights money is heading right now, even a historically reliable free-to-air fixture like this isn't safe anymore

[Violet Caitlin]

Good to know TNT is showing literally every event live rather than just the marquee sports, that's actually a genuine upgrade in coverage depth even if it comes with a paywall attached

[NeonPhantom]

The Victoria Australia withdrawal backstory explains so much about why this feels like a scaled down Games, reusing 2014 venues with basically no lead time to build anything new

[Abbie21]

215 events across 11 sports is a real reduction from what these Games used to offer, worth setting expectations accordingly if you're used to a bigger multi-sport spectacle

[Lucy_35]

Worth remembering this only being open to Commonwealth of Nations members is why USA and China are never in the mix, that's just the nature of the competition rather than any surprise absence this year

[Solo Lantern]

The daily 8:30am to 10:30pm live studio show sounds like a solid way to catch up on highlights throughout the day even if you can't watch every event live as it happens

This is a useful practical breakdown, been seeing people online confused all week about why they can't find it on BBC iPlayer like they expected

[Terry53]

HBO Max carrying this alongside TNT Sports streaming is an interesting cross-platform setup, curious how smoothly that access actually works for people without an existing subscription to either
