The Commonwealth Games started in Glasgow, but the BBC isn't showing it

The 2026 Commonwealth Games kicked off with an opening ceremony at Glasgow's OVO Hydro on July 23, with the first full day of sporting action, 3x3 basketball, bowls, boxing, para powerlifting and swimming, getting underway on July 24. The Games run through to a closing ceremony on August 2, and this is the fourth time Scotland has hosted, after Edinburgh in 1970 and 1986 and Glasgow itself back in 2014

The big change this year, and the reason a lot of people have been confused looking for it on their usual channel, is that the BBC will not be showing the Commonwealth Games at all in 2026, ending a run of coverage that stretched back to 1954, 72 consecutive years. The BBC said it was unable to match the winning bid, and TNT Sports has taken over as the main broadcaster instead. Full live coverage of every single event is available through TNT Sports and its streaming service HBO Max, but that means a subscription is required to watch the bulk of the action live

If you don't want to pay for a subscription, Channel 5 is stepping in as the main free-to-air option, showing extensive daily highlights covering the biggest moments, medal wins and key talking points from the Games rather than live coverage of every event. TNT Sports has also confirmed a live studio show broadcasting daily from 8:30am to 10:30pm UK time, touring between venues to capture key moments in real time alongside expert analysis, available to subscribers

Worth knowing too, this year's Games are a notably smaller affair than usual, since original host Victoria, Australia pulled out back in 2023 over spiralling costs, leaving Glasgow to step in without time to build any new athlete accommodation or venues, reusing facilities from the 2014 Games instead. Roughly 3,000 athletes are competing across 215 events in 11 sports, a meaningfully reduced program compared to previous editions, and the United States and China, who don't compete at the Commonwealth Games at all, remain notably absent as always given the competition is restricted to Commonwealth of Nations members and their territories

Channel 5 stepping in with daily highlights is a reasonable compromise for anyone who doesn't want to pay for another streaming subscription just for this, though obviously missing live coverage is a real downgrade
