So yesterday's results mean we get Spain against Portugal on Monday night in Dallas, in the round of 16 of all places. Yamal against Ronaldo, the European champions against the Nations League holders, and one of the genuine title contenders going home before the quarter finals even start. This is what the expanded 48 team format gives you, blockbuster ties absurdly early

On yesterday's evidence it is hard to look past Spain. They have not conceded a goal all tournament, Simon is setting clean sheet records, and they swatted Austria aside while Portugal needed a stoppage time header and a VAR intervention to get past Croatia. Yamal even said after the Austria game that the World Cup starts now, which sounds like a young lad who fancies the big stage

But Portugal have match winners everywhere. Leao's cross for the Ramos winner was a thing of beauty, Costa is in the form of his life in goal, and the midfield of Vitinha and Joao Neves can go toe to toe with anyone including Rodri and Pedri. The selection question is whether Martinez is brave enough to bench Ronaldo against opposition this good

Historically these games are tight and horrible, and Spain's unbeaten record inside 90 minutes means Portugal might fancy dragging it to penalties. Who do you have going through, and is it too early to call this the tie of the whole tournament?

Spain and it is not close. Portugal rode their luck against Croatia and Spain are a level above Croatia

BringItOnRhodes43

People wrote Portugal off before the Croatia game too. Knockout football does not care about your possession stats

The Yamal vs Cancelo matchup decides this for me. If Cancelo gets caught upfield like he does at club level, Yamal will destroy that side

Lucky Dean

Bench Ronaldo and play Ramos from the start. Sentiment cannot pick the team in a round of 16 tie against Spain
Posted from a machine that definitely needs a clean install

You do not bench the greatest scorer in international football history when he just scored in the last round. Madness in this thread

I can't wait for this match up of Spain v Portugal. Two titans collide.

I watched the highlights of the croatia match. Croatia might fancy themselves unlucky

Greatest scorer or not, he is 41. Spain will press the Portugal back line and Ronaldo offers nothing in that phase

GlassKnight

The 48 team format taking flak here is unfair. We got Cape Verde and Cabo dreams, Morocco knocking out the Dutch, and now this tie. The knockouts are stacked

DudleyBoy

Counterpoint, a tie this big in the last 16 means the quarters and semis will be weaker on one side of the bracket

Neutral here and I just want 120 minutes and penalties. These two owe us a classic after that boring Euro 2024 meeting

Whoever wins this gets the Swiss or Colombia side of the draw opening up nicely. Massive prize beyond the bragging rights

Monday cannot come fast enough. Dallas is going to be absolute chaos with both sets of fans

Strange fixture for the round of 16 but that's tournament football for you. One draw or one missed chance earlier and suddenly you get heavyweight clashes way too soon.

Spain look fluid going forward but Portugal still have that awkward ability to drag games into their rhythm and frustrate everyone. Feels like one of those matches that could go either way depending on who settles first :)

This is exactly the kind of matchup organizers probably did not want this early in the knockout stage. Two teams that could easily be in a final meeting instead crashing into each other now.

Portugal's experience in big games cannot be ignored, but Spain's younger core plays with a tempo that can overwhelm almost anyone. If this turns into a transition game, it gets messy fast.
Still figuring it all out

Dallas hosting Spain vs Portugal feels a bit surreal. Neutral venue, massive stakes, and half the crowd probably just there for the spectacle rather than allegiance.

Could end up feeling like a club friendly on steroids for ten minutes, then suddenly someone like Yamal or Ronaldo reminds everyone what's actually at stake :D

The Yamal vs Ronaldo storyline is going to dominate every pre match show, but the real battle is probably midfield control. Whoever dictates tempo there wins more often than not.

Ronaldo still has that knack for showing up in moments that matter, even if he's not involved for long stretches. Spain will know they cannot switch off for a second against him :o

Spain's passing structure versus Portugal's direct counter threat is a classic contrast. On paper Spain should control possession, but control does not always equal control of the scoreboard.

Portugal have players who can flip a game in seconds, especially if space opens up behind the fullbacks. This could turn into a game of patience versus punishment.

Feels unfair that this matchup is happening this early. You want these kinds of games in semifinals or finals where the stakes feel earned over time, not decided by early draw chaos >:(

Still, it does make the tournament more intense right away. No easing into anything when two giants collide like this.
It's not a bug, it's a feature

Inland Aidan

There is something refreshing about getting a big derby early though. No calculations, no waiting, just straight into high pressure knockout football.

Spain will probably try to dominate possession from minute one, while Portugal will be comfortable sitting slightly deeper and striking when the moment appears. Could be a chess match with sudden explosions :)
