Sport fans are some of the most superstitious people on earth. Logic says that wearing a particular shirt, sitting in a particular seat or eating a particular meal cannot affect the result of a match hundreds of miles away. Yet millions of fans follow their rituals faithfully anyway, just in case. When the team loses, the ritual must have been done wrong

Common superstitions include lucky clothing, unwashed socks, the same route to the ground, the same pub, the same pint and refusing to watch penalties. Some fans will not speak during a tense finish, while others insist on standing in the same spot in their living room. Players have their own rituals too, from putting on the left boot first to being the last one out of the tunnel

My superstition is a scarf that my grandad gave me in the nineties. I only wear it for big games, and if we lose, it goes in a drawer until the next season. It has been in the drawer a lot recently. I still cannot bring myself to stop using it

Other sports have their own traditions. Cricket fans have lucky seats, darts fans have lucky walk on chants and tennis fans have been known to refuse to change their position on the sofa during a final. Formula One fans who move at the wrong moment have been blamed for crashes by their families

What match day superstitions do you follow? And has one ever let you down badly?
