Lewis Hamilton has finally put a Ferrari on pole position. PlanetF1 reports that Hamilton beat his former Mercedes teammate George Russell by just 0.009 seconds in qualifying for the Mexico City Grand Prix

It is Hamilton's first pole for Ferrari and the 105th of his record breaking career. At 41, he is the oldest driver to take pole since Mario Andretti in 1982

It came after a difficult weekend. Hamilton's car stopped in second practice with an engine problem, and in the first Q3 runs he was third, four tenths behind, after running wide through the esses. Russell then took provisional pole from Charles Leclerc, who had led both practice sessions, before Hamilton found the time on his final lap

Hamilton said it feels great and that he is so happy, describing the weekend as very tough and challenging. He added that he loves what he does and that the love is not gone. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who needs only two points to become the youngest champion in Formula 1 history, also qualified near the front

After a hard first season with Ferrari, this is a big moment for Hamilton and for the team. Pole by nine thousandths of a second is as close as it gets. The race could still be decisive for the championship, so Sunday promises plenty of drama

Can Hamilton convert pole into a first Ferrari win in Mexico? And will Antonelli clinch the title on Sunday?

Leclerc leading both practice sessions and then missing pole will sting. He had the pace all weekend. Mexico has been kind to Ferrari before. Ferrari's strategy calls will be key

Antonelli only needs two points, so he will drive carefully. Hamilton does not have to worry about the title

That frees him to race hard. Mexico's long run to Turn 1 makes the start crucial

Nine thousandths of a second is nothing. That is a few centimetres at the finish line. Qualifying does not get much closer than that. Ferrari fans have waited a long time for this
