Kane becomes first Englishman to win Germany's player of the year award

Harry Kane has been voted Germany's Footballer of the Year for 2026, the first Englishman to ever win the award since it began in 1960. The Bayern Munich striker scored 61 goals in all competitions last season as his side completed a domestic double, winning both the Bundesliga and the German Cup, while also reaching the Champions League semi finals.

The award comes from Kicker magazine and is voted on by 695 members of the German sports journalists association. Kane picked up 272 votes, comfortably ahead of Bayern teammate Michael Olise on 203, with Stuttgart's Deniz Undav a distant third on 61 votes. Olise had actually finished as runner up the year before too, behind Florian Wirtz, so this makes it back to back years where a Bayern player has been the closest challenger to whoever wins.

It was a clean sweep for Bayern across the board this year. Vincent Kompany picked up the coach of the year award, and women's captain Giulia Gwinn won the women's player of the year, meaning all three major individual honors from this vote went to the same club for the first time in the award's history. Club CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen leaned into that, calling it Kane, Kompany and Gwinn all sharing the same Bayern identity in the club's official statement.

This adds to what's already been a big individual season for Kane, who also picked up his second European Golden Shoe after netting 36 league goals. He's now considered among the favorites for the 2026 Ballon d'Or as well, which would be a remarkable individual honors sweep across both club and continental awards in the same calendar year for a player who spent so much of his career being defined by not winning trophies

The Bayern sweep across player, coach, and women's player of the year in the same season is remarkable and probably won't get repeated for a long time. Winning all three major individual honors in one calendar year takes both an incredible team season and multiple genuinely deserving individual candidates lining up at once. Most clubs are lucky to get one standout individual winner in a given year, let alone three across different categories. Feels like the kind of stat that gets brought up constantly in years to come
