Jonny Clayton has called for the world's top 16 players to be guaranteed a place in every major tournament, DartsNews reports. Clayton is 52 and ranked sixth in the world. Despite that, he has still not qualified for November's Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton. Seven qualifying events remain

His season has been frustrating in one particular way. He has lost three finals, including an 8-6 defeat to Luke Humphries at the Belgian Darts Open. He has also been runner up at two other ProTour events. Reaching finals but not winning them has left him outside the Grand Slam field so far

Speaking to Oche180, Clayton said he does not understand how the top 16 are not in everything. He argued that a ranking reflects the sacrifices needed to stay there. He compared it to the FA Cup leaving out Premier League clubs. He added, with a smile, that if he misses out he will be on holiday somewhere enjoying the sun

His argument has merit. Top players earn their rankings over two years of consistent results. Fans also want to see the biggest names at the biggest events. A Grand Slam without one of the world's top ten would feel odd

On the other hand, the Grand Slam has always had a unique format. It rewards recent title winners and qualifiers from different circuits, which gives it a special flavour. Automatic places could reduce opportunities for rising players. Clayton's 108.81 average in Basel this weekend shows he is in great form anyway, so he may well qualify the normal way

Should the top 16 automatically qualify for every major? Or is earning your place part of what makes events like the Grand Slam special?
