James Anderson's long association with Lancashire is coming to an end. CricTracker reports that Lancashire will not offer the 44 year old a new contract, ending a 25 year relationship with the county

Anderson was told in a meeting on 19 October, and the news was announced on 25 October. The decision is linked to a rebuild under new director of cricket Paul Farbrace and chief executive Richard Kenyon, after a poor 2025 County Championship season in which Lancashire finished second from bottom of Division Two

Farbrace called Anderson without doubt the greatest bowler Lancashire and England have produced. Anderson wrote on Instagram that if it was up to him it would not have ended like this, but that he wished the players and fans all the best for the future

His record is extraordinary. He took 704 Test wickets in 188 Tests for England, with his last Test in July 2024, and 443 wickets in 112 Championship matches for Lancashire since 2001. He helped them win the title in 2011 and captained the side in 2025. Whether he retires or joins another county remains to be seen

It feels like a sad way for one of England's greatest players to leave his home club. At 44, Anderson clearly still wants to play, which says a lot about his love of the game. Another county could do far worse than give him one more season

Should Lancashire have kept Anderson for one more year? And would you like to see him play for another county?
