Kimi Antonelli could become Formula 1 world champion this weekend. RacingNews365's Jake Nichol has worked through the maths ahead of the United States Grand Prix in Austin on 25 October

Antonelli leads the championship with 340 points, 102 ahead of George Russell and 111 ahead of Lewis Hamilton. To clinch the title in Austin, he needs to leave with a lead of 125 points, which is only possible if he wins the race

If he does win, Russell must finish eighth or higher to keep the fight alive. Ninth would leave them tied on points, but Antonelli would take the title on countback with more wins. Hamilton would need to finish fourth or higher, and Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris would all be mathematically out

The history at stake is remarkable. Antonelli would become the youngest world champion ever, beating Sebastian Vettel's 2010 record by more than three years. He would also be the first Italian champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953

After Austin come Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi, so even if it does not happen this weekend, the title looks very likely. Toto Wolff's comments about treating both drivers equally will be tested if Russell needs team help. It has been an extraordinary season for the young Italian

Will Antonelli clinch it in Austin? And where does his season rank among great title wins?
