Lewis Hamilton won the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Catalunya on Sunday, claiming his first victory for Ferrari and his 106th career win, ending a 686-day drought since the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix. The win came via a three-stop strategy that Ferrari executed perfectly, with a virtual safety car triggered by Fernando Alonso's retirement allowing Hamilton to pit and come out ahead of the Mercedes duo. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli then retired from second place with a suspected power unit failure with four laps remaining, handing Hamilton maximum points.

The all-British podium of Hamilton, George Russell and Lando Norris was the first since 1968. Hamilton is now 41 points behind Antonelli in the drivers championship with Ferrari entering serious title contention for the first time this season. Mercedes had won all six previous grands prix of 2026. Toto Wolff acknowledged that Ferrari now represent a third party in the championship fight. Hamilton said he had not been thinking about an eighth world title but would not rule it out.

Can Hamilton and Ferrari sustain a title challenge and was this win a turning point or a fortunate result?

The strategy was the story. Three stops versus two and it worked because the VSC gave them the undercut at exactly the right moment. But Ferrari read the race brilliantly and had the pace in the final stint to make it stick

41 points with however many races left is very catchable if Antonelli's reliability is a concern. That Mercedes power unit failing at exactly the worst moment raises real questions about whether it is a pattern

Hamilton at 41 winning his first race for a new team in his second season there is one of the great sporting stories of 2026 regardless of what happens in the title race

The all-British podium being the first since 1968 is the detail that absolutely nobody saw coming when this season started. Hamilton, Russell and Norris on the podium together is remarkable
