Gian van Veen produced a historic performance at the Dutch Darts Championship in Maastricht. DartsNews' Lucas Michael reports that he whitewashed Sebastian Bialecki 6-0 in the second round with an average of 120.24, a new European Tour record

The previous record belonged to Dave Chisnall, who averaged 118.66 at the 2018 German Darts Championship. Van Veen started with a 12 dart hold including a 77 checkout, broke with another 12 darter, and won two 13 dart legs to lead 4-0

His best leg was an 11 darter, and he closed the match with a 14 darter against the throw. Even more remarkably, he said he had been averaging 126 before a score of 60 that drew boos from the crowd. That shows just how high the standard was

Van Veen was in disbelief afterwards, asking whether he had averaged 120. Michael van Gerwen's televised record of 123.40 still stands, and van Veen joked that he would leave that one to MVG. His next opponent was Brendan Dolan

As the new number one seed in Maastricht, van Veen was already the man to beat. Performances like this show why so many people tip him as a future world champion. Darts is in a golden era of young talent

Is this the best European Tour performance ever? And can van Veen win the whole event?
