Men's tennis spent the better part of two decades being defined by three players who pushed each other to heights the sport had never previously seen, and the argument over which of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic deserves the greatest of all time title is still one of the most hotly contested in the entire sport. Djokovic holds the outright record with 24 Grand Slam singles titles, including a men's record 10 Australian Open crowns, and he also spent a record 428 weeks as world number one, numbers that on pure accumulation put him clearly ahead of both of his great rivals.

Nadal's case rests heavily on his utterly dominant record at the French Open, where his clay court mastery became so total that opponents openly discussed simply trying to lose as few games as possible against him rather than genuinely believing they could win, alongside a head to head record against Federer that tilted heavily in his favour across their long rivalry. Federer, meanwhile, is often credited with the most aesthetically complete game the sport has produced, a serve and all court style that made him the standard bearer for tennis at its most elegant, along with a run of dominance in the mid 2000s that redefined what consistent excellence at the top of the sport actually looked like before Nadal and later Djokovic caught up to and eventually passed him statistically.

With all three men now retired or in the final stretch of their careers, the raw numbers increasingly favour Djokovic, but plenty of fans still weigh style, rivalry history and cultural impact just as heavily as the actual trophy count. Where do you land on this one?

The numbers just are not close anymore once Djokovic got to 24 majors and that 428 week record at number one. At a certain point pure statistical dominance has to outweigh sentimental attachment to how a player made you feel watching them.
