Formula 1 is shortening its races next year, but only temporarily. RacingNews365 reports that the standard Grand Prix distance will drop from 305 kilometres to 290 kilometres in 2027, linked to changes in the power units. Monaco will stay at 260 kilometres

The FIA has already written a return to 305 kilometres into the 2027 regulations, which were published after the latest World Motor Sport Council meeting. That suggests this is a one season adjustment rather than a permanent change

The reason is the balance between petrol and electric power. In 2026 the split is 53 percent combustion engine and 47 percent electric. That moves to 58 and 42 in 2027, with a target of 60 and 40 in 2028

More combustion power means higher fuel flow, which could force teams to fit bigger fuel tanks and change their chassis designs. Shorter races reduce how much fuel is needed, avoiding those expensive changes for now

The 2026 rules have been controversial, with plenty of debate about energy management and racing quality. Adjusting the power split shows the FIA is listening. Shorter races might even make for more flat out driving

Will shorter races make F1 more exciting? And was the 2026 power split a mistake?
