The F1 Commission has approved a plan to reduce standard grand prix race distances from 305 kilometres down to 290 kilometres starting in the 2027 season, effectively cutting around two to three laps from most circuits on the calendar, a roughly 5 percent reduction overall. Monaco remains an exception to the new standard distance, continuing to run at its own shorter 260 kilometre length as it already does under current rules.

The change is being driven by a genuine technical necessity rather than a purely entertainment focused decision, stemming directly from the incoming 2027 power unit regulations. Fuel flow rates are increasing significantly to accommodate a major shift in how each car's power is split between the internal combustion engine and its electrical systems, moving from roughly an even 50/50 split today to 58/42 in favour of electrical power by 2027, and then further to 60/40 by 2028. Without shortening the actual race distance, teams would need meaningfully larger fuel tanks to complete a full grand prix, which would in turn eat into the sport's existing cost cap in ways regulators wanted to avoid.

Alongside the headline distance change, the Commission also approved removing the existing three hour time limit that currently applies to suspended races, greater flexibility to extend free practice sessions if they are interrupted, and the elimination of gearbox homologation requirements for 2027, giving manufacturers including Aston Martin more design freedom over that specific component. The meeting itself took place in London on September 21, with formal ratification by the FIA World Motorsport Council scheduled for October 15, a step widely expected to be a formality at this stage.
