Bryson DeChambeau threatened to quit The Open after a two-shot penalty for accidentally flattening some grass

[ScrollGoblin32]

Bryson DeChambeau's second round at Royal Birkdale ended in genuine chaos on Friday. He had just carded a brilliant four under 66 to move to seven under, one shot off the lead, when Open Championship officials pulled him aside in the scoring tent with questions about his second shot on the par four fifth hole

Officials had reviewed footage showing DeChambeau appearing to walk through hip high fescue behind his ball and stomp it flat before playing his shot out of the rough. He was taken back out to the fifth hole by rules chief Grant Moir and several officials for an animated on site discussion, at one point bringing a club to demonstrate his stance and insisting the flattened grass was not actually in his intended swing path, just where he stood to get a sightline to the hole

Officials weren't convinced, and DeChambeau was assessed a two stroke penalty under Rule 8.1a for improving the area of his intended swing, turning his bogey on the fifth into a triple bogey and dropping his round from 66 to 68. Moir was explicit that intent doesn't matter under the rule, an improvement means altering conditions affecting the stroke so the player gains a potential advantage, and that applies even when the action is accidental, as it was in Bryson's case

DeChambeau, now tied for fifth at five under and three shots behind leader Lucas Herbert, went straight to the range afterward and, according to his agent, seriously considered not teeing off for Saturday's third round in protest. He ultimately confirmed he would play, calling the decision disappointing on social media, while golf analysts including Brandel Chamblee were sharply critical of his conduct in the moment. It's a rough break for a two time major champion who has struggled all season, having missed the cut at the Masters and gone quiet at the other two majors before this surprisingly strong start at Birkdale

[RandyOrton26]

The rule not caring about intent at all is what makes this genuinely rough, everyone seems to agree he didn't mean to gain an advantage but the letter of the law doesn't care about that distinction

[DeadChat]

Threatening to withdraw over a two shot penalty feels like a massive overreaction, especially since he was still very much in contention afterward at five under

[BrokenDave72]

Bringing a club out to the fifth hole to physically demonstrate his stance to the officials is such a specifically Bryson way to argue a rules dispute, very on brand for how methodically he approaches everything

[Galaxy Sofia]

Turning a bogey into a triple bogey on review after the round has ended is brutal, that's a swing of two full shots discovered well after he'd already mentally moved on from the hole

[CMPunk02]

Given how poorly his season had gone before this week, actually walking away from a tournament where he was three back of the lead would have been a strange decision emotionally

[Messi]

The debate over inconsistent rules enforcement in golf comes up constantly, worth remembering the R&A applied the letter of the law correctly here even if the outcome feels harsh

[Cantona]

Credit to him for actually showing up Saturday despite how angry he clearly was in the moment, walking away would have made this a much bigger story for the wrong reasons

[Hermit]

That kind of retroactive penalty is brutal because the player has already mentally moved on from the hole. Turning a bogey into a triple after signing the card feels like getting punished twice.

At the same time, links golf has always been strict about improving your lie. Even something as small as flattening grass can be seen as gaining an advantage, so the officials are going to enforce it.

[Jenny75]

Can see both sides here. The rule exists for a reason, but the timing makes it feel harsh.

If it's caught immediately, fine, add the shots and move on. Finding it later changes the emotional impact completely, especially in a major.

[Jade]

The wording of the rule is pretty clear about not improving the area of intended swing, and flattening grass falls into that bucket.

What's tricky is intent. Was he trying to gain an advantage or just moving around normally?

Golf tends to punish the outcome regardless of intent, which is why these situations always spark debate

[Rosie96]

Threatening to quit feels a bit dramatic, but you can understand the frustration in the moment.

Adrenaline is high, you think you've played a great round, and then it gets revised after the fact.

That's a tough pill to swallow in any sport.

[GoldDriver]

Links conditions make this even more sensitive. The rough is unpredictable, and players are constantly trying to find a stance without making things worse.

One small movement can look like a deliberate improvement on camera.

Slow-motion replays don't help either, they make everything look more intentional than it probably was.

[CollapseState87]

The bigger issue might be consistency. Fans just want to know that everyone is being judged the same way.

If similar incidents in the past went unpunished, then this one feels unfair.

Consistency is what gives rules credibility.

[Blake_73]

There's also the question of how much players are expected to police themselves versus relying on officials and video review.

Golf has always had that self-regulating culture, but modern tech is changing the balance.

Now everything can be scrutinized after the fact.

[2026]

Feels like one of those situations where the letter of the law clashes with the spirit of the game.

Technically correct decision, but still leaves a bad taste.

Those are always the hardest calls.

[RayOfLight73]

Some players would just take it on the chin and move on, others react more emotionally. Bryson has always been a bit more expressive, so this fits his personality.

It adds to the spectacle, for better or worse

[Natalie_86]

The delay in applying the penalty is what really stands out. In most sports, decisions are made in real time.

Golf's ability to revisit things later creates these awkward situations.

Might be time to rethink that process.

[Nicola]

There's a slippery slope here too. If you start penalizing every minor movement of grass, where do you draw the line?

Players need to be able to take a stance without fear of a penalty every time.

Clarity in enforcement would help.

[Shane_8]

Part of the drama of golf is that tiny details matter. A blade of grass, a slight movement, it can all add up.

That's what makes it fascinating but also frustrating.

Margins are incredibly fine at that level.

[AEWCallum93]

End of the day, majors are decided by small margins and strict rules. That's part of what makes them so intense.

Still, moments like this remind everyone how unforgiving the game can be
