Arsenal reached their first Champions League final in 19 years and lost it in a penalty shootout. PSG 1-1 Arsenal after 90 minutes at the Puskas Arena in Budapest. Kai Havertz opened the scoring in the 5th minute. Ousmane Dembele equalised from the penalty spot in the 64th minute. Extra time settled nothing. PSG won 4-3 on penalties.

Arsenal had won the Premier League this season and were the form team in Europe. They beat Real Madrid in the quarter-finals and Inter Milan in the semis. PSG had eliminated Aston Villa. This was supposed to be Arsenal's year.

Winning the Premier League and losing the Champions League final on penalties is genuinely one of the cruelest outcomes English football can produce. Arteta has built something real, this will not be the last final

Dembele's penalty to make it 1-1 is the moment that changed everything. Arsenal were on course to win it until that 64th minute spot kick

PSG have now won the Champions League for the first time. The spending, the years of disappointment, the near misses. They finally got there

Havertz scoring after 5 minutes and Arsenal leading for most of the match makes this harder to take. They were 85 minutes from being champions of Europe

Arsenal reached the final without their best player at 100%. The squad depth that Arteta built is real. They will be back

The penalty shootout lottery is the worst way to decide any final. Both teams deserved more than a coin flip from 12 yards
