Fernando Alonso has criticised the FIA's handling of the aborted start at the Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang, Motorsport Week reports. When the new 2026 power units ran into energy deployment problems on the wet formation lap, several cars lost throttle response, including Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari. Race Control stopped the start, sent the teams a software update and restarted the race in the original grid order. Alonso argues that normal procedure would have meant restarting in the order cars entered the pit lane

Asked whether the decision was unfair, Alonso did not hesitate. "100 percent. I mean, this is motor racing, you know," he said. He suggested the FIA had put spectacle ahead of fairness. He pointed out that other drivers' retirements had never led to a race being stopped, and questioned why Hamilton's situation was treated differently

Alonso finished eighth, so he was not one of the drivers who stood to gain the most from a different restart order. That gives his criticism a little more weight. He suggested the FIA will need to explain its reasoning at the Singapore Grand Prix, which is the next race on the calendar. Drivers' briefings there could be lively

There is a fair counter argument. The software fault affected cars across the grid, not one driver's mistake, and leaving cars stranded on a wet track would have been dangerous. Restarting in grid order arguably reset things fairly for a problem nobody caused. But Alonso has a point that consistency matters, and the rules should be clear before a crisis rather than decided in the middle of one

Was restarting in the original grid order the right call? And is Alonso right that the FIA treated Hamilton differently?

Alonso never misses a chance for a sharp quote. At his age, he has seen every kind of FIA decision. Some of his complaints are fair, some are mischief

Still, he is usually worth listening to. Few drivers understand racing rules better
