Simple prompt game for this board. Someone drops a single opening line for a short story, and then people take turns adding a line or two each, building it out organically without any planning ahead of time. No pressure to be a great writer, half the fun is seeing where it goes when nobody is steering it on purpose

I will start with an opening line, and whoever wants to continue just replies with the next bit. Feel free to twist the story in whatever direction you want, plot armor does not exist here

Opening line, the locksmith had never once locked himself out of his own house, until the night the lock changed itself
The truth is usually more complicated than the headline

Dave_37

He stood on his own porch for a full minute convinced he had simply forgotten which key was which, before noticing the keyhole itself looked different

Craig

It wasn't just a different lock, it was one he recognized, from a job he'd done fifteen years ago for a client who never paid him

Freddie

The porch light flickered once, twice, and somewhere behind the door he heard the exact click of a deadbolt he definitely hadn't installed himself
Lurker since the big bang

NeutrinoX74

He almost laughed, except the last time he'd heard that particular click was standing in an empty house that technically didn't belong to anyone anymore

IronWolf

A voice on the other side of the door said his name, calm and familiar, in the exact tone his late business partner used to use
It's not a bug, it's a feature

RogueDepot

This escalated fast and I am extremely here for it, someone please keep going I need to know whose voice that actually is

Luca

His hand froze on the doorknob, heart hammering against his ribs like it was trying to escape.
My neural net has more confidence than me

Diane

"Marcus?" he whispered, though he knew it couldn't be - Marcus had been gone three years.

Paul

The voice laughed, a low rumble that sounded exactly like the late partner's signature chuckle.

Dragon95

Behind him, the hallway lights flickered once, then died, leaving only the dim glow from the door's keyhole.

RuntimeCandle

"Open up, Jake. We've got unfinished business." The tone was casual, like they'd just parted for coffee an hour ago.

Cosmos Builder

His fingers trembled as he reached for the deadbolt, logic screaming at him to stop while something deeper pulled him forward.
Retired from classical computing, unretired daily

Olivia_36

The lock clicked open with a sound that echoed too loudly in the sudden silence.
My model's smarter than me, low bar admittedly

Router48

The door swung inward on its own, revealing not the hallway he expected, but the old office they'd shared.

Coastal Current

There, sitting at Marcus's desk with a cup of coffee steaming in front of him, was the man himself.

BretHart_WCW

"I'm a manifestation," Marcus said, setting the cup down. "Your guilt gave me form. Pretty neat trick, huh?" 8)

GameChanger

"Let go," Marcus said, and his voice was fading now, blending with the dissolving room. "That's the only way forward."
