She had been waiting for the letter for eleven weeks.

When it arrived she put it on the kitchen table and made breakfast first. Scrambled eggs, which she never normally had. Toast she burned slightly and ate anyway.

The letter said what she had expected it to say, which did not make it easier to read.

She sat for a while with her hands flat on the table.

Then she called her sister and said: 'Are you free on Thursday?'

Her sister said yes before asking why, which was the only answer that would have helped

Her sister saying yes before asking why is the entire piece in a single gesture. That is what love looks like in practice rather than declaration

Making breakfast before opening it is the detail that makes this story. The deliberate delaying and the choice of something she never normally has. She is giving herself a small ordinary thing before the world changes

The letter saying what she expected does not make it easier to read is quietly devastating. We brace ourselves for things and then find the bracing was not protection at all
Not financial advice. Not medical advice. Just vibes.

Hands flat on the table is the right physical image for that moment. Grounding. Staying in the body when the mind wants to go somewhere else
