She had been on the waiting list for fourteen months.

When the email arrived she read it twice, then forwarded it to her husband with no subject line and no message, which was how they communicated the things that mattered.

The device was small. Smaller than she had imagined from the diagrams.

The surgeon said: it will feel strange at first. You will be aware of it. Then you will not be.

Three weeks later she ran for a bus and caught it. On the top deck she watched the city move past and thought: I am the same person I was. Mostly.

Her husband sent her a message that said: well?

She replied: I caught the bus.

I caught the bus is doing enormous work as an ending. The small ordinary achievement as the proof that everything worked. Perfect choice
