Why quantum AI still isn't showing up on most IT priority lists

[Vacant Niamh]

Despite growing hype around the intersection of quantum computing and AI, most enterprise IT departments still aren't treating quantum AI as a near term priority, reflecting a broader gap between executive belief in quantum's eventual importance and actual organizational readiness to deploy it. An IBM study on this topic found that while nearly six in ten executives expect quantum enabled AI to reshape their industry eventually, fewer than three in ten expect to actually deploy quantum tools themselves anytime soon, a mismatch IBM described as unusual compared to how belief and readiness tracked together during past technology transitions like cloud computing and cybersecurity

Part of the disconnect comes from what quantum AI actually means in practice right now. Rather than replacing classical AI systems, the genuinely near term relationship runs mostly in the opposite direction, using classical machine learning techniques to help design quantum experiments, calibrate quantum hardware and mitigate the errors that still plague current quantum systems. Using quantum computers to meaningfully accelerate AI workloads themselves, by contrast, still requires large scale, error corrected quantum systems that remain years away from being commercially available

IBM's analysis suggests quantum computing's most realistic immediate role is as a complementary accelerator for specific AI driven workflows involving optimization, simulation and probabilistic analysis, rather than any kind of wholesale AI replacement. Bosch chief expert Thomas Eckl was quoted saying quantum will never stand alone, and that classical computing, AI and quantum need to work together in connected workflows instead. Curious what people think IT departments should actually be doing right now given this gap, start building quantum literacy and roadmaps early, or reasonably wait until the technology genuinely matures further before investing real attention

That six in ten versus three in ten split is honestly the clearest way to visualize this whole disconnect, genuine belief in eventual importance without any matching sense of near term urgency or concrete readiness

[Mark94]

AI currently helping quantum computing far more than quantum currently helping AI is a genuinely important correction to a lot of breathless quantum AI marketing that implies the relationship already flows meaningfully in both directions

[Isaac80]

Cloud computing and cybersecurity both saw belief and readiness track together historically, so quantum specifically breaking that usual pattern says something real about just how conceptually unfamiliar this technology still is to most executives

[GoldbergFan_X]

Bosch's quantum will never stand alone framing feels like the genuinely realistic long term picture worth internalizing, this was never likely to be a wholesale replacement technology, more just one additional specialized tool layered into existing hybrid workflows

[Foundry42]

Worth remembering executive belief in eventual importance without matching investment is honestly a pretty common pattern across plenty of emerging technologies, not something unique specifically to quantum computing as a category

[Brittle Ruby]

Curious how this specific readiness gap actually varies by industry, sectors like finance and pharma with genuinely quantum relevant optimization problems presumably feel real urgency here that a lot of other industries simply don't yet

[Foundry16]

Building quantum literacy early seems like the low cost, low risk move regardless of exact deployment timeline, understanding the landscape costs relatively little compared to the real risk of getting caught flat footed once things do mature
