Had a thought. Why is artificial intelligence growing so fast compared to quantum computing?

Artificial intelligence is growing faster because it runs on existing hardware.

Quantum computing needs completely different technology, which is harder to build and scale.

AI benefits from:

cloud computing
GPUs
existing infrastructure

That is the conclusion most people following it closely are landing on. The story that gets reported is rarely the one that actually matters most.

The comparison is interesting because AI and quantum computing are really at different stages. AI benefited from decades of work on classical computing, huge datasets and graphics processors that were already becoming powerful. Quantum computing is still trying to build the foundation it needs before it can scale properly.

A big difference is that AI could immediately solve useful problems. A company could train a model, put it into a product and see results. Quantum computers are still fighting issues like error correction and keeping qubits stable long enough to do meaningful calculations. The excitement is there, but the path is much harder.

People sometimes talk about quantum like it is just waiting for a faster chip, but it is a different type of challenge. A normal computer getting smaller and faster was a relatively smooth progression. Quantum hardware has to deal with very strange physics and engineering problems at the same time.

The AI boom also had a perfect storm behind it. The internet created massive amounts of data, cloud computing made access cheaper, and companies were already sitting on the infrastructure needed to deploy AI. Quantum does not have that same ready-made ecosystem yet.

One thing worth remembering is that quantum computing might have a huge impact without ever becoming something everyone uses directly. Most people do not think about the servers running their software either. It may become a specialised tool for chemistry, optimisation or research rather than a replacement for laptops. :)
