Quantum supremacy claims keep getting walked back once someone finds a smarter classical algorithm, and I want to know which current headline result people expect to age the same way

Not asking whether quantum computing works, asking which specific claimed milestone looks shaky under scrutiny right now

Any claim tied to a single narrow benchmark problem designed specifically to be hard for classical computers and useless for anything else, those results tend to fall the fastest once a tensor network method catches up

The room temperature superconductor adjacent claims worry me more than pure quantum computing ones, that field has a track record of retracted papers that quantum computing hasn't fully avoided either

I think several near term commercial timeline predictions from company executives will age badly, the technology curve rarely matches the sales pitch

Watch anything claiming a specific qubit count as the headline metric with no mention of error rates, raw qubit count without fidelity numbers is a marketing figure, not a capability figure

I'd bet against any claim of near term quantum advantage for drug discovery specifically, the actual chemistry problems that matter commercially are still too large for current hardware
Quantum computer said maybe, so I'm calling it a win

Cryptographically relevant quantum computers arriving within five years is the prediction I'd bet against hardest, error correction overhead alone puts that further out than most public statements suggest
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

The claims that a specific quantum advantage demonstration has zero classical counterpart tend to get disproven within a year or two once researchers actually try hard to find one
