IonQ published benchmarks showing 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity on trapped ion systems. That's genuinely impressive. Superconducting qubits are maybe 99% with optimization. The difference sounds small until you run error correction. Higher fidelity means fewer redundant qubits needed for same error rate. That's the game changer. IonQ is still facing scaling challenges. Individual laser control per qubit gets harder as you add qubits. But the fidelity advantage is real and measurable. This isn't marketing hype it's physics. Superconducting companies are responding with their own optimization pushes. The competition is real and driving progress.

Fidelity is nice but scaling matters more. You can have perfect qubits that don't multiply. Superconducting scales easier on chip. That's the tradeoff IonQ still hasn't solved

The laser control challenge is real but solvable with engineering. If trapped ions can get to 1000 qubits with 99% fidelity that beats superconducting at 10000 qubits with 99% fidelity every day

IonQ's benchmarks are real but their systems are small. Easy to get high fidelity on 10 qubits. Show me 100 qubits at 99.99% fidelity then we talk

Trapped ions need cooling too. Just different cooling. They're not magic room temperature qubits. Don't buy the hype

The math on error correction strongly favors high fidelity. Extrapolating to large systems favors trapped ions. But we need to see it happen

IonQ should be worth more than they are just based on these numbers. If fidelity is king they're closer to the throne than anyone

Cost per qubit though. Superconducting is getting cheaper. Trapped ions are expensive to manufacture. Price matters in real markets
