Microsoft claims progress on Majorana topological qubits claiming inherent error protection. The theory is elegant. Topological qubits are naturally protected from certain decoherence mechanisms. If real this solves error correction. But Microsoft has been promising this since 2015. The proof of concept never quite arrives. Recent papers show progress on material science and quasiparticle detection. But zero commercial qubits exist. The gap between theory and hardware is enormous. Other approaches are shipping systems now. Microsoft is still in research. This doesn't mean topological is impossible just that the timeline is genuinely uncertain and Microsoft's optimism might be warranted or might be hope.

Topological is elegant theory but engineering elegant theory into working hardware is where Microsoft gets stuck. They're not alone in this problem
