Taiwan budgets over $130 million for a national quantum computing push

Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council has budgeted NT$3.76 billion, roughly 116.6 million dollars, for a quantum computer system project, while the Industrial Technology Research Institute will separately spend NT$14.6 billion, with support from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, on a broader 2027 technology program that includes building a key quantum computing technology verification platform. Combined, the two allocations represent well over 130 million dollars in dedicated quantum funding

This builds on Taiwan's longer running national quantum strategy, which has previously included launching a quantum talent program sending PhD candidates abroad for specialized study, forming the Quantum Industry Technology Promotion Office under ITRI to organize the domestic supply chain, and opening international tenders for quantum computer procurement while navigating US export restrictions on advanced hardware. The council is also preparing a second phase research program, referred to internally as the Quantum Leap Project, spanning 2027 to 2031

Taiwan's strategy leans heavily on its existing dominance in semiconductor manufacturing, aiming to attract international quantum partners by offering advanced fabrication capacity in exchange for technology collaboration, rather than trying to build every piece of the quantum stack domestically from scratch.
