Physicists from the University of the Balearic Islands and Maynooth University published an algorithm in APS Open Science that automatically designs photonic quantum gates and circuits by combining optimization with a pruning step that simplifies the final result. The method starts with a general template for an optical circuit containing tunable parameters, optimizes those parameters, then strips out unnecessary elements according to predefined criteria, producing a leaner working circuit rather than an unnecessarily complicated one

The researchers demonstrated the algorithm by producing both approximate and numerically exact implementations of the CNOT gate, a fundamental building block of quantum computation, along with circuits implementing the Deutsch-Jozsa, Grover and Fourier transform algorithms using two qubits. All of these implementations can reportedly be integrated into larger quantum information protocols rather than existing purely as isolated proof of concept demonstrations

Photonic quantum computing specifically relies on manipulating individual particles of light through optical components like beam splitters and phase shifters, and designing efficient circuits for that kind of hardware by hand becomes increasingly difficult as circuits grow more complex.
