QuEra Computing reported that an AI agent, Anthropic's Claude, developed and validated software that can automatically restore a critical quantum computer laser system in seconds, a task that previously required a specialist to manually intervene and could take five to ten minutes even for an expert. The work was conducted through a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard, a framework letting AI agents operate laboratory and manufacturing equipment within preset safety limits, developed as a collaboration between Anthropic and the HHMI Janelia Research Campus

QuEra's computers use precisely controlled lasers to manipulate neutral atoms serving as qubits, and those lasers can drift out of their required frequency due to environmental changes, forcing a recovery process known as restoring a laser lock before computation can continue. Claude ran experiments continuously, including overnight, on a dedicated testbed, evaluating results and revising its approach across hundreds of simulated and real world failure scenarios, eventually producing a permanent control program that recovered the system in 695 of 700 timed trials across seven different fault types and never falsely reported a successful recovery when it hadn't actually happened

QuEra said a team of four specialists had previously spent two to three weeks building an earlier recovery script covering only known failure conditions, while Claude's process covered hundreds of failure cases far faster and, when asked to improve rather than just recover the lock, cut residual noise by a factor of five compared to expert manual tuning. QuEra Vice President Sergio Cantu said the goal is quantum computers that fix themselves, ending the need for someone driving in at 2am to fix a laser lock manually.
