Quantum supremacy and quantum advantage sound like the same thing. They aren't, and the difference matters

[BrokenDave72]

In 2019, Google announced its quantum computer had achieved something historic, solving a problem no supercomputer on Earth could realistically match. Physicist John Preskill, who coined the term quantum supremacy years earlier, later explained he wanted a word that would convey the excitement of the field, something dramatic enough to capture what quantum computers had just proven was possible. The catch is that the problem Google's machine solved was not useful to anyone, it was chosen specifically because it was hard, not because solving it helped cure a disease or design a better battery

That is exactly the gap quantum advantage is meant to close. Where supremacy just means beating a classical computer at anything, however pointless, advantage means solving a real problem that someone actually needs solved, faster or better than any classical approach could manage. A quantum computer could achieve supremacy today on a contrived puzzle while still being decades away from advantage on something like drug discovery or logistics planning

This distinction is not just academic pedantry, it is an useful filter for reading quantum computing headlines. Whenever a company announces a breakthrough, the question worth asking is simply, was this a dramatic stunt designed to prove the physics works, or did it actually solve something people needed solved. Both are real achievements, but only one of them tells you anything about whether quantum computers are ready to change the world yet

Preskill wanting a word that would convey excitement rather than technical precision explains so much about why supremacy became such a loaded, overhyped term in the press

[NatureBoyOwen16]

This is an useful lens, next time a quantum headline comes up I am going to ask myself which of the two this actually is before getting excited

[Dragon95]

The distinction between beating a classical computer at anything versus beating it at something useful is such a clean way to cut through marketing language

[Marcus]

Worth remembering supremacy has already been claimed multiple times by different companies, while genuine advantage on a real world problem is still basically unclaimed territory

[Debbie96]

I never realized the original 2019 demonstration was deliberately chosen to be useless, that context changes how I read the whole announcement in hindsight

[LivMorgan_Legend]

Good reminder that a stunt proving physics works and a tool solving real problems are both valuable, just for completely different reasons

[Beth]

This is a great filter question for literally any emerging technology claim, not just quantum computing, useful versus merely dramatic

[PlanckLimit36]

This makes me want to go back and re-read every quantum computing headline from the last five years with this new lens applied

The fact these terms get used interchangeably in casual conversation despite meaning different things explains a lot of the confusion around quantum progress
