Optimisation problems are everywhere in the real world: finding the fastest delivery routes across thousands of vehicles, balancing risk across a portfolio of millions of assets, scheduling flights so that delays do not cascade across an entire network. Classical computers solve these by grinding through possibilities one chunk at a time, and for the largest versions they simply cannot find the best answer in any reasonable time. Quantum computers are not universally faster, but for certain classes of optimisation problem they offer a genuine structural advantage. Banks, logistics firms, and energy companies are already running early hybrid quantum-classical experiments, and D-Wave has actual paying customers using annealing hardware for scheduling tasks today. This is probably the area where quantum delivers commercial value first, even before full fault tolerance is achieved.
