Quantum computers are not magic wands and understanding what they actually cannot do is just as important as the hype

A quantum computer will not make your laptop faster. It will not speed up loading a webpage, run your games better, or make AI chatbots smarter in any direct sense. Quantum machines are specialised tools that outperform classical computers only on specific mathematical problems with particular structures: certain optimisation tasks, simulating quantum chemistry, and breaking some types of encryption. For everything else, your classical computer wins easily and is far cheaper to run. The field would do itself a genuine favour by being clearer about this, because the gap between what quantum is and what the press releases imply is wide enough that the eventual reality check could set back public trust and investment significantly.

Every technology has a trough of disillusionment after the peak of inflated expectations. Quantum is still climbing the peak and the drop is going to be steep.

Specialised tool that solves specific problems extremely well is still an incredibly valuable thing. It just needs to be said plainly instead of dressed up as magic.

I think the hype actually slows the field down by attracting investment into ideas that do not have a realistic path. Honest communication serves everyone better.
