Quantum advantage is real but it almost certainly does not mean what most articles say it means

Quantum advantage means a quantum computer solving a specific problem faster than any classical computer can. The word to pay attention to is specific. Google's Willow chip demonstrated advantage on a benchmark test that was deliberately designed to be hard for classical machines and easy for quantum ones, and that benchmark has no real-world use. Genuine useful quantum advantage, where the speedup applies to something a business or scientist actually cares about, has not been convincingly demonstrated yet. That does not mean the technology is fake, it means we are still in the stage where researchers are proving the physics works before the engineering catches up. The hype cycle tends to skip straight from lab benchmark to world-changing without mentioning the decades of hard work in between.

I think quantum advantage on niche chemistry problems is probably closer than people think. Drug simulation does not need to be general purpose.
